Biswajit Dhar

ARTNeT Advisor: Trade in Agricultural Goods and Food Security

Mr. Biswajit Dhar is Distinguished Professor, Council for Social Development and Honorary Fellow, Institute of Chinese Studies. He was Professor, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India and served as Director General of the Research and Information System for Developing Countries in New Delhi, a think-tank of India’s Foreign Ministry. Professor Dhar was instrumental in the establishment of the Centre for WTO Studies of the Government of India and was the Head of the Centre for several years.


He served as a member of the Indian delegation to multilateral treaty negotiations, including the World Trade Organization, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and the Convention on Biological Diversity. He was nominated in the expert groups of several inter-governmental organizations. Professor Dhar has been working extensively with a number of intergovernmental organizations including UNESCAP, UNDP, FAO, UNCTAD and the WHO, on issues at the intersection of trade and sustainable development. He served on the Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of India and was a Member of the Board of Trade, Government of India
