Formulation of Myanmar’s National STI Policy for Sustainable and Inclusive Development
Myanmar’s Sustainable Development Plan 2018-2030 (MSDP) identifies creativity and innovation as important drivers to enable Myanmar to leapfrog into the 21st century, catch up with its peers within the region and create opportunities for generations to come. To meet these ambitious goals, Myanmar will need to make concerted efforts to develop science, technology, and innovation capabilities.
A new Science, Technology and Innovation Law was enacted on June 25, 2018 and is set to play a vital role in achieving the goals, pillars and strategies of the MSDP. The Department of Research and Innovation (DRI), Ministry of Education, is responsible for planning and executing the STI Law and by-law development and has requested ESCAP’s advisory services to develop a national STI Policy. The STI Policy will guide ministries and relevant institutions on priority areas for promoting STI, identifying responsibilities, set timelines and allocate resources.
As part of ESCAP’s commitment towards capacity-building and multi-stakeholder engagements (SDG 17), a series of virtual events such as training webinars, facilitated discussions and consultations are expected to take place during the policymaking process.
